Barbados produces 1,200 tonnes of waste per day, which can be visualized as approximately 1,200 car bodies per day in volume. In recent decades, Barbadian society has become more affluent, but this affluence has been accompanied by an adopted western ‘through-away society’ approach.
The Future Centre Trust has been raising awareness on waste issues nationally for many years. The late Dr. Colin Hudson, the founder of the FCT, was passionate about reuse and integrated this into just about every project that he had ever done from the FCT garden to the café, to educational displays and projects.
Since 2010 Clean Up Barbados has been used as an educational tool to get the business community and the community at large involved in becoming a part of the solution. CoRE Network Recycling has set up recycling systems in schools all over the island to get school children involved and educated on the issues of waste and ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. Donation Nation is our newest project that continues to move Barbados towards a circular economy.
The objectives of the Donation Nation Project are five-pronged:
To divert waste from the landfill.
To educate the public on ways to divert waste from the landfill through donating preloved items and upcycling items that need refurbishing.
To provide affordable options to the public.
To offer training sessions to the community and the charities that we support on upcycling and other trades.
To support local charities with contributions from sales of proceeds.
